Officer Steven Figueroa firing, on Wednesday, Aug. 21, comes on the heels of his latest arrest for an alleged sexual assault and an exhaustive Internal Affairs investigation.
“After consideration of all information available through an investigation, it is clear that Steven Figueroa is wholly unfit to serve as a police officer,” said Perez. “This officer violated his oath of office and the public trust. As of this afternoon, Steven Figueroa has been terminated as a member of the Bridgeport Police Department.”
Figueroa, who was hired in 2016, was first arrested on November 2017 by Stratford Police for criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. The charges were later dropped when the victim declined to press charges.
He was next arrested on April 8, 2018, by Bridgeport Police for stalking, breach of peace and harassment after an incident involving the same victim from the Stratford incident. He was ordered to enter a probation-type program in court, which he is still completing.
The arrests then continued to pile up as he was cuffed again on June 22, 2018, this time by Milford Police for breach of peace and violation of a protective order.
Figueroa managed to stay out of trouble for about a year, with his next arrest coming on Saturday, June 29 by Shelton Police, again for assault, unlawful restraint, threatening and risk of injury to a child after a woman came to the police station and told officers that he had refused to let her leave an apartment or return personal items, all while a small baby was present.
On Saturday, July 20, Shelton Police arrested Figueroa again for sexual assault involving the same victim from the prior arrest.
And, finally, on Monday, July 29, he was arrested by Bridgeport Police for violating the conditions of his release.
Since his last arrest Mayor Joe Ganim has called for some kind of action to be taken to deal with Figueroa.
